The Blockade Of The United States Essay - 741 Words
On March 5, 1861, William Henry Seward was appointed Secretary of State by Abraham Lincoln. Seward convinced President Lincoln to establish a blockade around the major Southern seaports. The blockade was put into effect shortly after the attack on Fort Sumter. On April 19, 1861, Lincoln issued a proclamation for a Union blockade to surround South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. Later on April 27, Lincoln extended the blockade to include the states of North Carolina and Virginia. The blockadeââ¬â¢s purpose was to stop the flow of trade goods, weapons, and supplies between the southern states and other nations. This war tactic placed an enormous amount of pressure on the Confederate states. Should We Celebrate Thanksgiving and the Pilgrims
Thanksgiving has become synonymous with family, food, and football. But this uniquely American holiday is not without controversy. While schoolchildren still learn that Thanksgiving marks the day that Pilgrims met helpful Indians who gave them food and farming tips to survive the winter, a group called the United American Indians of New England established Thanksgiving as its National Day of Mourning in 1970. The fact that UAINE mourns on this day poses a question to socially conscious Americans: Should Thanksgiving be celebrated? Some Natives Celebrate The decision to celebrate Thanksgiving divides Native Americans. Jacqueline Keeler wrote a widely circulated editorial about why she, a member of the Dineh Nation and Yankton Dakota Sioux, celebrates the holiday. For one, Keeler views herself as ââ¬Å"a very select group of survivors.â⬠The fact that natives managed to survive mass murder, forced relocation, theft of land, and other injustices ââ¬Å"with our ability to share and to give intactâ⬠gives Keeler hope that healing is possible. In her essay, Keeler takes issue with how one-dimensionally natives are portrayed in commercialized Thanksgiving celebrations. The Thanksgiving she recognizes is a revisionist one: These were not merely ââ¬Ëfriendly Indians.ââ¬â¢ They had already experienced European slave traders raiding their villages for a hundred years or so, and they were waryââ¬âbut it was their way to give freely to those who had nothing. Among many of our peoples, showing that you can give without holding back is the way to earn respect. Award-winning author Sherman Alexie, Jr., who is Spokane and Coeur dââ¬â¢Alene, also celebrates Thanksgiving by recognizing the contributions the Wampanoag people made to the Pilgrims. Asked in a Sadie Magazine interview if he celebrates the holiday, Alexie humorously answered: We live up to the spirit of Thanksgiving cuz we invite all of our most desperately lonely white [friends] to come eat with us. We always end up with the recently broken up, the recently divorced, the brokenhearted. From the very beginning, Indians have been taking care of brokenhearted white people. We just extend that tradition. Problematic Historical Accounts If weââ¬â¢re to follow Keelers and Alexieââ¬â¢s lead, Thanksgiving should be celebrated by highlighting the contributions of the Wampanoag. All too often Thanksgiving is celebrated from a Eurocentric point of view. Tavares Avant, former president of the Wampanoag tribal council, cited this as an annoyance about the holiday during an ABC interview: ââ¬Å"Itââ¬â¢s all glorified that we were the friendly Indians and thatââ¬â¢s where it ends. I do not like that. It kind of disturbs me that we... celebrate Thanksgivingâ⬠¦ based on conquest.â⬠Schoolchildren are particularly vulnerable to being taught to celebrate the holiday in this manner. Some schools, however, are teaching revisionist Thanksgiving lessons. Teachers and parents can influence the way children think about Thanksgiving. Celebrating in School An anti-racist organization called Understanding Prejudice recommends that schools send letters home to parents addressing efforts to teach children about Thanksgiving in a manner that neither demeans nor stereotypes Native Americans. Such lessons could include discussions about why not all families celebrate Thanksgiving and why the representation of Native Americans on Thanksgiving cards and decorations has hurt indigenous peoples. The organizationââ¬â¢s goal is to give students accurate information about Native Americans of the past and present while dismantling stereotypes that could lead children to develop racist attitudes. ââ¬Å"Furthermore,â⬠the organization states, ââ¬Å"we want to make sure students understand that being an Indian is not a role, but part of a personââ¬â¢s identity.â⬠Understanding Prejudice advises parents to deconstruct stereotypes their children have about Native Americans by gauging what they already believe about indigenous peoples. Simple questions such as ââ¬Å"What do you know about Native Americans?â⬠and ââ¬Å"Where do Native Americans live today?â⬠can reveal a lot. Parents should be prepared to give children information about the questions raised by using Internet resources such as U.S. Census Bureau data on Native Americans or by reading literature about Native Americans. The fact that National American Indian Month and Alaskan Native Month are recognized in November means that information about indigenous peoples is plentiful around Thanksgiving. Some Natives Donââ¬â¢t Celebrate The National Day of Mourning kicked off unintentionally in 1970. That year a banquet was held by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to celebrate the 350th anniversary of the Pilgrimsââ¬â¢ arrival. The organizers invited Frank James, a Wampanoag man, to speak at the banquet. Upon reviewing Jamesââ¬â¢ speechââ¬âwhich mentioned European settlers looting the graves of the Wampanoag, taking their wheat and bean supplies, and selling them as slavesââ¬âbanquet organizers gave him another speech to read that left out the gritty details of the first Thanksgiving, according to UAINE. Rather than deliver a speech that left out the facts, James and his supporters gathered at Plymouth, where they observed the first National Day of Mourning. Since then, UAINE has returned to Plymouth each Thanksgiving to protest how the holiday has been mythologized. Giving Thanks Year-Round In addition to disliking misinformation on the Thanksgiving holiday that has spread about natives and Pilgrims, some indigenous peoples donââ¬â¢t recognize it because they give thanks year-round. During Thanksgiving 2008, Bobbi Webster of the Oneida Nation told the Wisconsin State Journal that the Oneida have 13 ceremonies of thanksgiving throughout the year. Anne Thundercloud of the Ho-Chunk Nation told the Journal that her people also give thanks continually, so a single day of the year for thanksgiving clashes with Ho-Chunk tradition. ââ¬Å"Weââ¬â¢re a very spiritual people who are always giving thanks,â⬠she explained. ââ¬Å"The concept of setting aside one day for giving thanks doesnââ¬â¢t fit. We think of every day as Thanksgiving.â⬠Thundercloud and her family have incorporated the fourth Thursday of November into the other holidays observed by the Ho-Chunk, the Journal reports. They extend Thanksgiving observance until Friday when they celebrate Ho-Chunk Day, a large gathering for their community. Celebrate Inclusively If you celebrate Thanksgiving this year, ask yourself just what youââ¬â¢re celebrating. Whether you choose to rejoice or mourn on Thanksgiving, initiate discussions about the holidayââ¬â¢s origins by focusing not just on the Pilgrimsââ¬â¢ point of view but also on what the day meant for the Wampanoag and what it continues to signify for American Indians today.

Human Resource Planning and Development Leads to Success...
Human Resource Planning and Development: Human resource development is a concept that has existed even before the 1980s and has played an important role in the success, growth, and development of organizations. The emergence of this concept can be attributed to the establishment of apprenticeship programs in the 18th Century (Werner DeSimone, 2011, p.5). The significance of human resource development in todayââ¬â¢s business environment is attributed to its role in organizational profitability. The primary role of this department is to ensur e that McDonalds hires and retains competent employees who help in the realization of business objectives. One of the major ways that such kind of employees are recruited and maintained in the corporation is through constant analysis of the labor market. Actually, McDonalds has market analysts who keep informed with events in the labor market and labor demands in different restaurants. These analysts keep up-to-date records of labor supply and demand to ensure the companyââ¬â¢s operations are not affected by shortages of labor from outlets. The process of forecasting labor demands in an organization is usually more of an art than a science because of the need to provide informed estimates instead of absolute results (Nankervis, Compton Baird, 2008, p.132). This is always a complicated process because of the ever-changing nature of the business environment where organizations operate. There are two approaches used to forecast labor demand in an organization i.e. quantitative and qualitative method. Aging Population of Singapore Samples â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Aging Population of Singapore. Answer: Issue Statement: Grant for an age friendly community, for the aging population of Singapore influenced by the success of the program in Australia. Background and Discussion According to WHO the population of the world is aging rapidly. As per the reports published by WHO, in 2006, about 500 million population of the world was older and by 2030 the figure will rise up to 1 billion. And by 2050, about 2 million populations will become senior citizens. In the low and the middle income countries the aging population is faced with a lot of problems such as communicable diseases, lack of proper infrastructural facilities. There are certain issues that cater to the ill heath of the aged population. Some of these are lack of pensions and social protection from the families (Buffel, Phillipson Scharf, 2012). Age discrimination, as the society might think it would be wise enough to invest time on the young population as they are the future of the country. Another factor is the lack of consideration of the older people in humanitarian response during critical or emergency conditions. It should be kept in mind that increase in the aging population of the world has got global implications. The elder persons are more susceptible to the non-communicable diseases and injuries related to falls and other terminal illness that requires proper palliative care (Willes et al., 2012). They are also vulnerable to the cognitive disorders and hence require special attention to avoid mortality and morbidity. As per the reports, the aging problem is quite critical as the average life span of people has increased largely which is responsible for the increase in the adult population (Fitzgerald Caro, 2014). As far as the health care is considered, the Singapore healthcare is still not efficient enough to address all the requirements of the aged care. Setting up of any care facilities requires a well planned financing system. The Singapore government is still trying to strive for proper retirement and finance plans in order to provide securities to the aged population. Furthermore The Singapore government is also looking out for plans to keep the aged people in the workforce to ensure healthy and independent living for them. In order to ensure a better life for the growing aged population, provision of age friendly communities has to be granted by the government (Willes et al., 2012). Till now, Australia has made a wide spread progress in providing aged care facilities by the provision of Age friendly communities. The department of communities of the Western Australia supports the development of the age friendly communities. The age friendly communities provide spaces, planned programs and initiatives to make a community suitable for all groups of people (Kendig, Elias, Matwijiw Anstey, 2014). In Australia, grants up to $10,000 are available to the local governments for undertaking the planning of the aged friendly community. There are grants up to $20,000 for the local government to work in collaboration with other local governments and other private organizations to set up a better community for the construction of the age friendly community (Kendig, Elias, Matwijiw Anstey, 2014). Options and/or Recommendations: The proposed options for setting up an age friendly community is the provision of certain services such as recognition of the wide ranges of resources and capacities among the older people. Prompt responses to the needs of the aged people, respecting their dignity and integrity, providing them with financial security, encouraging them to remain engaged in work to ensure healthy and independent living, provision of pensions for the retired ones, provision of public toilets, These are the options that can help in building up a successful all aged care community (Scharlach, 2012). According to the author Barusch, (2013), the development of an all aged care community can be faced with several barriers. The Singapore government had created aged friendly neighborhoods throughout the islands. As claimed by the ministry of Singapore The Ministry of health (MOH) and the ministry for community development have developed new aged care facilities such as senior activity centers, senior care centers, nursing homes (Tiong et al., 2013). According to the reports, space and manpower is scarce in Singapore. The health care services for the adults are all quite costly. The senior activity centers and the senior care centers would help the elderly people to socialize among themselves (Kendig Phillipson, 2014). Furthermore the senior care centers will be able to provide integrated day care facilities such as dementia care and day care to the elderly patients. As per the government the centers will be able to provide home care deliver services (Fitzgerald Caro, 2014). As seen from the reports these are some of the initiatives taken by the government of Singapore to address the needs of the aged care. In order to provide a long term care facilities to aged population, the Ministry of health, Singapore had provided with government subsidy for the aged care. The government of Singapore had introduced a six tiered subsidy framework for the elderly persons in the community ward. The ministry of health has introduced Medisave, medishield and the medifund policies for helping out the individuals to meet the hospitalization of the family members. A per the reports, the government of Singapore is still facing with the issue of the health care costs, availability of the hospital beds for the aged care (Greenfield, 2012). There is lot more still to be done in order to frame an appropriate all aged care community in Singapore. In order to resolve the issues there should be sub teams appointed for each of the sector in order to focus on each of the issues (Emlet Moceri, 2012). An appropriate leadership is necessary to bring about any positive changes in the institution. They will not only he lp to increase the workforce and would also help to motivate them. It is evident that the financing of the Singapore aged care needs to be brushed up for increasing the facilities, but there are certain risks to this. Increase in the health care costs of the country an increase the burden of the other sectors of the country. Implementation The solution has to be implemented by the committees in charge of the health care. The solution has to be implemented by the committees that have been appointed. The key steps involved in the development of al aged care community are as follows- age friendly transport facilities for accessing proper health services, a secure and safe environment, walkways cycle paths, age friendly buildings, provision of elevators, escalators, slip flooring, proper housing, safety pedestrian crossings and more (Fitzgerald Caro, 2014). Proper security and care to those people who cannot access the healthcare. In order to accomplish this, it is required to chalk out a suitable and a stipulated budget. The whole plan should be aimed at completing within a year. Communication The authorities or the groups that are responsible for making policies regarding aged care facilities should be disseminated with the information regarding the recommendations. The recommendations can be communicated by conducting essential meetings with the committees or by publishing suitable newsletters. E-mail alerts, web pages, robo-calls and phone trees. An effective communication plan would be able to break down the barriers to change by getting everyone at the same page and helping the stake holders in getting engaged in the needs for the change (Emlet Moceri, 2012). Low comedy and high ideals Essay Example For Students
Low comedy and high ideals Essay Hes an extraordinary playwright because he tends to handle very large issuestheres such admirable, courageous ambition in his work. He also has an extremely courageous theatrical sense. Some of the effects he calls for in his plays simply cant be realized. With this animated rush of words, Jeff Steitzer talks about Peter Barnes, the English playwright he has championed in this country since 1987and whose most recent play, Sunsets and Glories, has its American premiere under Steitzers direction at Seattles A Contemporary Theatre through Nov. 15. What can I say? he allows. I get sort of blithery when I talk about him. If Steitzer, like other Barnes enthusiasts, has trouble communicating the spine-tingling pleasure induced by the playwrights workswhich range from such plays as The Ruling Class, The Bewitched and his most savage work, Laughter! (which begins in the time of Ivan the Terrible then leaps forward to Nazi Germany and Auschwitz); numerous adaptations of Elizabethan and Jacobean drama; and the the screenplay of the recent film Enchanted Aprilit may be because Barnes is something of a rarified taste. (One English critic began his review of Barnes adaptation of Jonsons The Alchemist with the question, Will no one drop Peter Barnes down a deep well, and a couple of tons of earth after him?) Epic in scope, propelled by scorching wit and bawdy humor, Barness comedies arent merely black; theyre lined with pitch. A heady mixture of low comedy and high ideas, the plays are pungent critiques of religious power, class and authority (ecclesiastical and political) that unfold through a fairground framework of jokes, puns and tap-dancing. Outline1 Two sides of a coin2 Twisted manuscripts3 Ferocious anger and clownish laughter Two sides of a coin Barnes is best known in America for Red Noses, an exuberant song-and-dance extravaganza set in the 14th century, in which a band of monks tour plague-stricken France offering comedy as a salve against the Black Death. In essential Barnesian style, the troupe grows to include a blind juggler, a stand-up comic with a stutter and a pair of tap-dancing brothers who share one good leg. Written in 1978 and first produced by Englands Royal Shakespeare Company in 1985 (an instance of delayed gratification typical for first productions of Barness work), Red Noses has been mounted in this country by a number of resident theatres, including such highly physical, actor-centered ensembles as the Minneapolis-based Theatre de la Jeune Lune and the DellArte Players Company of Blue Lake, Calif. Steitzer himself has directed the play on two different occasions: its U.S. premiere at Chicagos Goodman Theatre in 1987, and (with David Ira Goldstein) the following year at ACT, during his second season as artistic director. His current production of Sunsets and Glories, featuring Red Noses veterans and longtime collaborators Laurence Ballard and Peter Silbert (the pair have appeared in 40 shows together over 17 years), draws contextually upon the earlier play. In a way its like looking at two sides of one coin, Steitzer explains. Red Noses is about people from the bottom of the heap. In this play, we begin at the top and wander down the corridors of the highest power imaginable at that time, papal power. Set in late 13th-century Italy during a time of papal transition, Sunsets and Glories examines the grimly comic struggles between Church and State as both bastions of power engage in a desperate effort to maintain the status quo. Barnes casts a scathing eye on three popes in succession: Nicholas IV, who appears only briefly before (as Barness stage direction puts it) Gods massive foot stamps down from the flies squashing him flat with a loud squelch; Peter de Morrone, later Pope Celestine V (Peter Silbert), a pure and saintly man; and Cardinal Benedict Gaetani, later Pope Boniface VIII (Laurence Ballard), who engineers Morrones destruction because the Holy Father is good but he isnt feared and who knows what hellish chain of events will result from just one act of unconsidered goodness? .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d , .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .postImageUrl , .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d , .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d:hover , .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d:visited , .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d:active { border:0!important; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d:active , .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u13da36e5d535a942c06cee80f0a85f8d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Defining the Essence of a Scene EssayBasically, says Steitzer, Barnes has written the same play over and over and over again. What happens in a world gone bad when a good person is injected into it, when a saint walks into our lives? Obviously, this play has a very pessimistic conclusion: We cant tolerate the complete revolution that these people inevitably represent. Twisted manuscripts The three popesMorrone, Gaetani and Nicholasall made a mess of it, Barnes once noted to his loyal Boswell, critic Bernard Dukore. One of them did it through love, one did it through power, and the other did it through a bit of both. In an unpredictable election year in which more than one candidate has flaunted power under the guise of love, the resonances of the play are almost too good to be true. Neither Steitzer nor his collaborators, howeverparticularly the productions designersare anxious to draw any overt parallels between the power machinations of medieval Italy and contemporary America. (The assumption is that people will be able to sniff it out for themselves, the director asserts. There was power in the 1300s and theres power now.) They emphasize instead a design that transcends the boundaries of historical research without becoming, as Steitzer says, stupidly anachronistic. When I first read the play, I felt it was about decay, observes set designer Charlene Hall, whose research led her to a study of Romanesque architecture and the ecclesiastical history of illuminated manuscripts. The style of the manuscriptsnaive and simple, but at the same time twistedeventually became a basis for the corroded, aged look of the set, which Hall describes as a combination of the corrupt and the pious, architecturally realistic but not descriptive of the period in any specific way. Ferocious anger and clownish laughter For composer and sound designer Todd Barton, already an expert on Renaissance and medieval music, Sunsets and Glories posed a somewhat different challenge. Bartons score combines use of the Dies Irae and other music specified by Barnes, original songs and what the composer describes as music and sounds, both abstract and theatrical, that people havent heard before. The play demands the flavor of the Middle Ages with a 20th-century spin. Steitzer describes the ideal actors for a Barnes play as people who can handle the emotional content of the play, who can handle the remarkable language that he creates that reminds you of the Jacobeans but is also contemporary, and at the same time are clowns. A spin on the century, fueled at once by a ferocious anger and a clowns laughter, is precisely what the epic ambitions of Peter Barnes are meant to achieve.

The editor often finds certain details that need clarification or explanations that cannot be explained clearly in the introduction or at the end of the paper. The purpose is used to create an outline that can be used to further explain the main points of the paper. In some instances, the purpose is used as a value add, which makes it an importance factor in the paper. This does not mean that it is a substitute for actual information. An example of the value of the purpose is when a topic becomes too technical or impenetrable for a layperson to understand. The purpose should be considered a significant part of the research paper and it should not be given too little importance or too much weight in the paper. In many cases, the purpose is already included in the outline as a way to explain some of the main points of the paper. The purpose is there to serve as a reference to help others find the point of the paper quickly. The question of what is a statement of purpose for the research paper is best answered by referring to the Journal of Research Methods and Processes. It provides a good overview of the outline of the paper. It does not provide a definition of the purpose, but it does give an overview of it. The editors and reviewers will attempt to address the purpose in the paper itself. However, they are not required to do so.When a purpose is not included in the paper, the purpose can be considered as an outline of the paper. However, there is no requirement to include the purpose in the paper. It is only meant to provide the reader with an outline of the paper.

The Sino-Indian War of 1962
The Sino-Indian War of 1962 In 1962, the worlds two most populous countries went to war. The Sino-Indian War claimed about 2,000 livesà and played out in the harsh terrain of the Karakoram Mountains, some 4,270 meters (14,000 feet) above sea level. Background to the War The primary cause of the 1962 war between India and China was the disputed border between the two countries, in the high mountains of Aksai Chin. India asserted that the region, which is slightly larger than Portugal, belonged to the Indian-controlled portion of Kashmir. China countered that it was part of Xinjiang.à The roots of the disagreement go back to the mid 19th centuryà when the British Raj in India and the Qing Chinese agreed to let the traditional border, wherever that might be, stand as the boundary between their realms. As of 1846, only those sections near the Karakoram Pass and Pangong Lake were clearly delineated; the rest of the border was not formally demarcated.à In 1865, the British Survey of India placed the boundary at the Johnson Line, which included about 1/3 of Aksai Chin within Kashmir. Britain did not consult with the Chinese about this demarcationà because Beijing was no longer in control of Xinjiang at the time. However, the Chinese recaptured Xinjiang in 1878. They gradually pressed forward, and set up boundary markers at Karakoram Pass in 1892, marking off Aksai Chin as part of Xinjiang. The British once again proposed a new border in 1899, known as the Macartney-Macdonald Line, which divided the territory along the Karakoram Mountains and gave India a larger piece of the pie. British India would control all of the Indus River watershedsà while China took the Tarim River watershed. When Britain sent the proposal and map to Beijing, the Chinese did not respond. Both sides accepted this line as settled, for the time being. Britain and China both used the different lines interchangeably, and neither country was particularly concerned since the area was mostly uninhabited and served only as a seasonal trading route. China had more pressing concerns with the fall of the Last Emperor and the end of the Qing Dynasty in 1911, which set off the Chinese Civil War. Britain would soon have World War I to contend with, as well. By 1947, when India gained its independence and maps of the subcontinent were redrawn in the Partition, the issue of Aksai Chin remained unresolved. Meanwhile, Chinas civil war would continue for two more years, until Mao Zedong and the Communists prevailed in 1949. The creation of Pakistan in 1947, the Chinese invasion and annexation of Tibet in 1950, and Chinas construction of a road to connect Xinjiang and Tibet through land claimed by India all complicated the issue. Relations reached a nadir in 1959, when Tibets spiritual and political leader, the Dalai Lama, fled into exile in the face of another Chinese invasion. Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru reluctantly granted the Dalai Lama sanctuary in India, angering Mao immensely.à Sino-Indian War From 1959 forward, border skirmishes broke out along the disputed line. In 1961, Nehru instituted the Forward Policy, in which India tried to establish border outposts and patrols north of Chinese positions, in order to cut them off from their supply line. The Chinese responded in kind, each side seeking to flank the other without direct confrontation. The summer and fall of 1962 saw increasing numbers of border incidents in Aksai Chin. One June skirmish killed more than twenty Chinese troops. In July, India authorized its troops to fire not only in self-defenseà but to drive the Chinese back. By October, even as Zhou Enlai was personally assuring Nehru in New Delhi that China did not want war, the Peoples Liberation Army of China (PLA) was massing along the border. The first heavy fighting took place on October 10, 1962, in a skirmish that killed 25 Indian troops and 33 Chinese soldiers. On October 20, the PLA launched a two-pronged attack, seeking to drive the Indians out of Aksai Chin. Within two days, China had seized the entire territory. The main force of the Chinese PLA was 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the line of control by October 24. During a three-week ceasefire, Zhou Enlai ordered the Chinese to hold their position, as he sent a peace proposal to Nehru. The Chinese proposal was that both sides disengage and withdraw twenty kilometers from their current positions. Nehru responded that the Chinese troops needed to withdraw to their original position instead, and he called for a wider buffer zone. On November 14, 1962, the war resumed with an Indian attack against the Chinese position at Walong. After hundreds of more deaths and an American threat to intervene on behalf of the Indians, the two sides declared a formal ceasefire on November 19. The Chinese announced that they would withdraw from their present positions to the north of the illegal McMahon Line. However, the isolated troops in the mountains did not hear about the ceasefire for several daysà and engaged in additional firefights. The war lasted just one monthà but killed 1,383 Indian troops and 722 Chinese troops. An additional 1,047 Indians and 1,697 Chinese were wounded, and nearly 4,000 Indian soldiers were captured. Many of the casualties were caused by the harsh conditions at 14,000 feet, rather than by enemy fire. Hundreds of the wounded on both sides died of exposure before their comrades could get medical attention for them. In the end, China retained actual control of the Aksai Chin region. Prime Minister Nehru was roundly criticized at home for his pacifism in the face of Chinese aggression, and for the lack of preparation prior to the Chinese attack.

Cause and Effect Essay - Moving to a Large City Cause Effect Essays
Whoosh! That is the precise sound I heard as the crazed flock of travelers headed for the train terminal. My best friend, Stacy, and I were left disoriented and understandably confused once the crowd thinned. We were at Madison Square Garden at the train terminal awaiting our train back to the hotel; it was our first trip to New York City. As one may imagine, it was a fascinating and surreal voyage into extreme urban life. It was so enthralling and exciting that afterward I felt compelled to make a permanent trek to a large city. Due to my experiences in cities like Atlanta and New York, I have an increasing desire to live in a large city because of the various forms of entertainment, myriad of transportation, and the never-ending excitement typical of such a fast-paced lifestyle. My main reason for having such a strong urge to move to a city like New York is the variety of entertainment such a city offers, such as shopping, unique eateries, and shows like concerts and musicals. During my stay in New York, I was s...
